Pores are tiny openings in our skin that release sweat and oil, but for some people, they can become easily clogged. According to dermatologist Geeta Yadav, MD, clogged pores occur when excess oil mixes with dead skin cells that don’t shed properly. Makeup, dirt, or pore-clogging (comedogenic) ingredients can also block pores and prevent oil from flowing. Comedogenic simply means pore-clogging, and while such ingredients aren’t the only cause of acne, they make breakouts more likely. Dermatologist Rachel Nazarian, MD, explains that for people with naturally oily skin or acne-causing bacteria, using comedogenic products is “like adding gas to the fire,” worsening acne and leading to frequent pimples.
