The Boy Whose Eyes Look Like They Belong to Another World

In the town of Jinka, tucked in Ethiopia’s Omo Valley, a boy named Abushe was born with something his community had never seen before: piercing, pale eyes set against deep dark skin. To some, it was unsettling. Children at school called him names, some even avoided him, and for a while his own community treated his eyes as a bad omen rather than what they actually were.

The real explanation came down to genetics. Abushe has Waardenburg syndrome, a rare condition that disrupts melanin production and pigmentation. It affects roughly 1 in every 40,000 people, and in some cases, like his, it produces strikingly light-colored eyes that stand in stark contrast to darker skin.

Life was not easy for him. He lived with his grandparents in a small hut, and at one point a fire tore through their home, destroying nearly everything they owned. Somehow, Abushe managed to save the one thing that mattered most to him: a red soccer ball. He dreamed of playing professionally one day, and idolized Lionel Messi, once saying, “Messi is just like me. He is not like the others.”

Everything changed when photographers began noticing him. A French photographer captured his portrait in 2016, and the images spread rapidly online. A travel blogger who met him months later described his eyes as looking “like two tiny planets.” Almost overnight, a boy who had been mocked for looking different became one of the most photographed children in the world, eventually named among the 88 people with the most beautiful eyes on the planet.

Today, Abushe’s story stands as a reminder that what once made him a target for cruelty became the very thing that made him extraordinary.
