Melissa McCarthy says immersing herself in the JonBenét Ramsey case for an upcoming Netflix drama left her with a deeply personal belief about one of America’s most famous unsolved murders.

The actress will portray Patsy Ramsey, JonBenét’s mother, in The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey, a new Netflix limited series set to premiere on December 10, 2026.

Clive Owen will play JonBenét’s father, John Ramsey, while Emily Mitchell will portray JonBenét.

Netflix says the series will examine the killing of the six-year-old and the enormous public scrutiny that surrounded the Ramsey family in the years that followed.

For McCarthy, preparing to play Patsy meant going far beyond simply reading a script.

She said she immersed herself in records connected to the case, including police and coroner material, as she tried to understand the woman she would be portraying.

That research eventually forced her to make a personal decision about how she would approach Patsy.

McCarthy said her own instinct was that she did not believe anyone in JonBenét’s immediate family was responsible for the child’s death.

She was careful to frame that as a personal feeling rather than a factual conclusion.

McCarthy acknowledged that she was not in a position to determine what actually happened.

But as an actor, she felt she needed to decide what Patsy herself believed and how to inhabit that emotional reality.

That distinction is especially important because JonBenét Ramsey’s murder remains unsolved.

No one has been charged with killing her.

JonBenét was reported missing from her family’s Boulder, Colorado, home on December 26, 1996.

A ransom note had been discovered inside the house.

Later that day, her body was found in the basement.

Authorities ruled her death a homicide.

The case quickly became one of the most intensely covered crimes in the United States.

For years, speculation focused on virtually every aspect of the Ramsey family’s lives.

Television specials, books, documentaries and tabloid reports offered competing theories.

Yet nearly three decades later, investigators have never publicly identified a killer.

Boulder Police continue to describe the case as an open homicide investigation and say detectives remain in contact with forensic experts and other law-enforcement agencies as new testing methods become available.

For McCarthy, however, the new series is not primarily about presenting another theory and asking viewers to solve the case.

She described the drama instead as a character-focused examination of the people who lived through the tragedy and its aftermath.

That approach appears to have shaped the way she views Patsy.

McCarthy said she developed considerable compassion for JonBenét’s mother while researching the role.

Patsy Ramsey died in 2006 after battling ovarian cancer.

McCarthy’s comments are likely to draw attention because theories surrounding JonBenét’s death remain fiercely debated.

Some investigators and commentators historically focused suspicion on members of the Ramsey family.

Others have argued that evidence points toward an intruder.

The case has generated decades of conflicting claims, disputed evidence and public speculation.

John Ramsey has continued to argue publicly that an outside intruder killed his daughter.

One incident in particular has remained central to a theory he has repeatedly discussed.

Months after JonBenét’s death, another young girl in Boulder was attacked inside her home by a masked intruder.

John has argued that the incident deserved closer comparison with his daughter’s case.

And that second attack became one of the reasons he continued insisting investigators should look beyond the Ramsey family.
