Gary Burghoff retired his role as Radar on M*A*S*H to be a daddy, a role he says is more important than money or fame

Gary Burghoff, best known as Radar from MASH*, stepped away from fame to save a family life that was slowly falling apart. Now 82, he recently became a grandfather when his son, professional angler Miles “Sonar” Burghoff, welcomed a baby girl. Though Miles didn’t follow his father into acting, his nickname “Sonar” reflects Gary’s iconic role. Burghoff had three children with his two former wives and left MASH* at the height of its success, choosing fatherhood over a lucrative career. The demanding shooting schedule strained his marriage, leading him to reduce his appearances before ultimately departing during season seven. Producers later tried to bring him back with a multimillion-dollar offer, but he declined. After facing financial struggles, he rebuilt his life by painting wildlife, selling canvases for up to $25,000. Fans continue to admire him not only for Radar, but for the integrity behind the choices he made for his family.
