Multiple people were injured Tuesday afternoon in a seven-car crash on Interstate 5 near the northbound Nyberg Street off-ramp, according to Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue (TVFR). The incident caused major traffic delays and triggered a large emergency response. Around 4 p.m., a vehicle was found flipped on its roof with the driver trapped inside. Police soon discovered that several cars were involved, including another vehicle on its side with a second trapped occupant.
Firefighters used struts, shoring devices, and rescue tools to stabilize the damaged vehicles and safely free both trapped individuals. They were transported to nearby hospitals in critical condition. Four others suffered minor injuries but did not require hospitalization. As crews worked, lanes on northbound I-5 were shut down, causing long backups during rush hour.
Oregon State Police will lead the investigation into what caused the crash, reviewing witness statements, dashcam footage, and traffic camera videos. It remains unclear whether driver error, mechanical failure, or road conditions played a role. Community members expressed concern about heavy I-5 traffic during peak hours and praised first responders for their fast action.
Recovery crews spent hours removing debris and damaged cars, keeping traffic heavily congested. Authorities urged drivers to stay patient and follow instructions as the scene was cleared. The crash highlighted the risks of high-speed travel on busy highways and the need for safe following distances and avoiding distractions.
Witnesses described chaos immediately after the collision, with vehicles scattered across several lanes. First responders emphasized that quick stabilization of the overturned cars prevented further injuries. The two critically injured victims received immediate hospital care, and their conditions are being closely monitored. Officials continue to provide updates as the investigation progresses.
