At the Detroit Zoo, truck driver Rick Swope witnessed a chimp named Jo-Jo fall into a deep moat after a fight with another male. Unable to swim, Jo-Jo was drowning as onlookers froze in shock.
Ignoring the zookeeper’s warnings, Rick leapt over the barrier and dove into the water, risking his own life to save the helpless chimp. His heroic act drew national attention and later earned praise from Jane Goodall, who shared Rick’s words:
“When I looked into his eyes, it was like looking into the eyes of a man — he was asking, ‘Won’t anybody help me?’”
Rick’s compassion in that moment became a powerful reminder of empathy that bridges species — a single act of courage that saved a life and touched millions.
