During a quiet afternoon, I noticed what looked like a tattered rope in the grass. On closer inspection, it was a line of about 150 caterpillars moving in perfect single file. This phenomenon, known as a “caterpillar train,” occurs in species such as the Pine Processionary Caterpillar. The lead caterpillars leave pheromone trails that guide the others, helping the group stay together and reducing the risk of predation. What first seemed strange became a fascinating lesson in nature’s ingenuity, reminding me to stay curious and appreciate the remarkable behaviors that exist in everyday surroundings.
