Edward Reis, a 62-year-old former forest ranger from Washington, was in hospice care after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Despite his illness, his final wish was simple yet profound: to experience the forest he loved one last time. His hospice nurse, Leigh Gardner, and chaplain, Curt Huber, teamed up with local firefighters to make it happen.
On March 26, 2014, the firefighters carefully carried Reis on a gurney through Meadowdale Beach Park in Edmonds, a place full of memories for him. For three hours, he enjoyed the sights, sounds, and scents of the forest he had spent his life protecting. They even gathered cedar branches so he could smell the trees, creating a deeply meaningful and peaceful farewell. This heartwarming act of compassion allowed Reis to reconnect with nature and say goodbye in the most special way.
