Gary Sinise Opens Up About the Tragic Loss of His Son Mac, 33
Actor and philanthropist Gary Sinise has shared the heartbreaking loss of his son, Mac, who died in January 2024 at age 33 after a five-year battle with chordoma, a rare form of bone cancer affecting just 300 people annually in the U.S.
Mac was diagnosed in 2019, just two months after Sinise’s wife, Moira, was found to have stage-three breast cancer. While Moira recovered, Mac’s cancer returned aggressively despite surgery and treatment. Sinise paused his acting career to support his son through his health crisis, saying, “I started putting everything I had into trying to find a miracle for Mac.”
In a moving statement, Sinise recalled how his son faced illness with courage and dignity: “He kept wanting to stay… but I know Mac was at peace at the end.”
Since Mac’s passing, Sinise has chosen to focus on family and healing. “You think about the things that are really important,” he said. “I hold my daughters a lot tighter.”
While Sinise isn’t ruling out a return to acting, he emphasized that his priority is being present for his loved ones.
“I am so blessed, fortunate, and proud to be his dad.”
