Arnold Schwarzenegger Warns Society Is Raising a Generation Unable to Handle Hardship

Arnold Schwarzenegger has warned that modern society risks raising a “generation of wimps and weak people” if children are not taught to handle struggle and failure, in remarks made during an appearance on The Howard Stern Show.

The 76-year-old former California governor and bodybuilding icon was responding to a question about the rising popularity of weight-loss drugs like Ozempic when he turned the conversation toward what he sees as a broader cultural shift away from resilience. “The more you experience the things you really don’t like, the more you can go and the tougher you get and the more you can handle. It’s that simple,” he said.

Schwarzenegger argued that comfort and overprotection stunt growth, both physical and mental, comparing the development of character to building muscle through resistance. “Anyone who tries to baby themselves and pamper themselves, and try to protect themselves… it’s over. You’re never gonna get there,” he said. He added that young people should be pushed toward difficulty rather than shielded from it: “So many young kids these days shy away from that, but you have to be attracted to that. Don’t start creating a generation of wimps and weak people… Let’s not over-baby people. Let’s go and teach kids to be tough, to do sports, to study and struggle and go through these kind of painful moments sometimes.”

The comments, first reported in 2023, resurfaced widely online and have continued to circulate, drawing a mixed reaction. Some listeners have echoed his view that younger generations are coddled and overly sensitive, while others have pushed back, arguing that discipline and toughness are not mutually exclusive with compassion, and that broadly labeling an entire generation overlooks individual circumstances.
