A man who once fought to change his own life ended up using that second chance to save someone else’s.
Staying calm in a crisis is something Trejo learned the hard way, long before the baby rescue. Trejo has stayed sober for more than 50 years and now helps others do the same. He has worked as a drug counselor and often speaks about second chances, in prisons, schools and rehab centers across California.
That calm helped at the crash. He crawled into the car, waited for help with the buckle and then cared for the baby. Meanwhile, firefighters worked to free the grandmother from the driver’s seat.
Trejo likes to say that everything good in his life came from helping someone else, and this day with the baby proved it again. For a man who once served years behind bars, it was proof that a second chance can save more than one life.
