Five minutes after our divorce was finalized, my ex-husband told me to take our two daughters and leave because his pregnant mistress was finally giving him the son he had always wanted. “I have my heir now,” he said. He thought he was abandoning an ordinary wife and the daughters he no longer valued. By that afternoon, he would discover I was a U.S. Army colonel—and that the baby his family was celebrating might not even be his.

Five minutes after our divorce became official, my ex-husband looked at me and said, “Take the girls, Lauren. I have a son coming now.”

For a moment, I couldn’t speak.

Caleb stood beside the mediator’s table checking his watch as though he hadn’t just dismissed our daughters—Iris, ten, and June, seven—because his pregnant mistress was supposedly giving him the “Mercer heir” his family had always wanted.

I closed my folder.

“All right.”

My calm response seemed to bother him.

“Tessa has an appointment at eleven,” he added. “My parents are meeting us there.”

Caleb’s family knew I served in the Army, but they had never cared enough to understand what I actually did. His mother called it my “office job,” while Caleb once joked that I mostly prepared reports for people with real authority.

I stopped correcting them years ago.

“You’re taking the girls tonight, right?” he asked. “Tessa needs the house quiet.”

“Yes.”

What Caleb didn’t realize was that our belongings had already been shipped, our passports were in my carry-on, and my new overseas assignment began that evening.

He had signed the relocation agreement without bothering to read it.

Hours later, Iris and June sat beside me in the military terminal, completely unaware that their father had just chosen an unborn son over them.

Then my phone rang.

Caleb.

I ignored the first three calls before answering the fourth.

“Where are you?” he demanded. “We need to talk.”

“I’m busy.”

His voice dropped.

“The doctor says Tessa is farther along than she told me.”

I said nothing.

“The dates don’t match, Lauren. I wasn’t even in the country when she would’ve gotten pregnant.”

Before I could respond, a uniformed officer approached.

“Colonel Bennett, transportation will be ready in twenty minutes.”

Silence filled the phone.

“Colonel?” Caleb finally whispered. “You’re a colonel?”

“You knew I was in the Army.”

“I thought you worked in administration.”

“No,” I said. “You just never cared enough to ask.”

He immediately demanded to know where I was taking the girls.

I reminded him that he had personally signed the relocation paperwork twice.

Then his voice changed again.

“Tessa admitted there might have been someone else.”

I looked through the glass at Iris helping June with her backpack.

Caleb had thrown away two daughters for the promise of a son.

Now even that promise was falling apart.

“Then ask Tessa the questions you should’ve asked before deciding your daughters weren’t enough.”

Before he could answer, someone from security approached me.

“Colonel Bennett, two people are requesting access to the terminal.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Who?”

The officer checked the screen.
