A strange glowing ring in the sky recently left onlookers wondering whether they were seeing a portal, an unusual atmospheric event, or something even more mysterious. The explanation, however, is far more natural.
The phenomenon is known as a **fallstreak hole**, a circular opening that can form in clouds containing supercooled water droplets. When an aircraft passes through, it can trigger some droplets to freeze into ice crystals. The surrounding droplets may then evaporate, gradually creating a larger opening.
When sunlight passes through the gap and illuminates the ice crystals, the result can look like a glowing doorway in the sky.
