NYPD Officer Saves Choking Baby on Side of Highway

An NYPD detective saved a choking baby during rush-hour traffic on the Bronx River Parkway. On December 11, 2025, Detective First Grade Michael Greaney was driving to work around 8:45 a.m. when he saw a black BMW speeding on the shoulder. He pulled the car over and the driver told him his baby was choking, the NYPD said.

Greaney reached into the car, took the baby girl wearing a pink onesie, and hit her back to clear her airway. The baby began breathing again within moments. A pediatrician who saw the scene stopped and checked the child and confirmed she was okay.

The father of the child later told police his daughter was doing well. Greaney has worked for the NYPD since 2008. Police and union leaders said his quick response saved the child’s life.
