Army veteran Ed Bambas has touched hearts across the country after more than 61,000 strangers donated nearly $2 million to help him retire. At 88 years old, Bambas was working as a cashier at a Meijer store in Brighton, Michigan, after mounting medical bills left him with debt, no pension, and no health insurance. He had spent over 50 years married to his wife Joan and became her full-time caregiver before she passed away seven years ago.
Samuel Weidenhofer learned about Bambas through a comment on social media and flew to Michigan to find him. Believing no senior should work out of necessity, he launched a GoFundMe that raised over $1.7 million in days.
On December 5, 2025, Bambas was surprised with a check for $1,771,406. Overwhelmed with emotion, he was reminded that kindness still exists—and that perseverance, even in old age, can inspire the world.
