Waitress Gets ‘$0’ Tip On ‘$187’ Bill, Turns Heads After Making Facebook Post In Response

A Colorado waitress sparked a conversation about tipping practices in the restaurant industry after sharing her experience on Facebook. Taylar Cordova posted a picture of a receipt showing a $0 tip on a nearly $190 bill, along with a heartfelt message about the challenges faced by waitresses and waiters who rely on tips to make ends meet.

Cordova’s post went viral, highlighting the dependence of many servers on gratuities to supplement their often low base wages. In the United States, federal law allows restaurants to claim a “tip credit,” reducing their hourly cash wage obligation to tipped employees as long as tips received bring their total earnings up to the minimum wage. This system means that servers’ paychecks can be significantly impacted by the tipping habits of their customers.

Cordova’s message focused on the human cost of not tipping. She wrote, “Whenever you feel like it’s probably fine to not tip your server, that’s one more bill stacking up because they’re short on money. This is food for the week that our families will go without because you didn’t think it was necessary, even after asking for everything under the sun and receiving it free of charge, mind you. This is one less basic necessity my daughter needs because even TWO more dollars is too much for you.” The post resonated with many who shared similar experiences or expressed newfound understanding of the server’s perspective.

The story sparked a debate about fair compensation for restaurant workers. Some commenters argued for higher base wages for servers, while others emphasized the importance of responsible tipping practices for diners. The conversation underscored the complex economic realities of the service industry and the need for transparency about how tips contribute to server income.
