TG If you see square waves forming in the ocean, get out of the water immediately

There is nothing more breathtaking than nature. Its capacity for transformation is so remarkable that it consistently astonishes us.

One of the marvels of nature that captivates us is the rare phenomenon known as cross seas, or waves that create watery grids.

These grids form when two wave systems intersect at angles exceeding 45 degrees, or when the wind drives waves in one direction while a swell pushes them in another. Nevertheless, despite their visual appeal, these grids can pose significant dangers to swimmers and vessels.

Beneath the stunning appearance lies a current that can endanger ships and threaten individuals in the water, as the areas where these chessboard-like patterns manifest are exceedingly challenging to navigate. Researchers believe that cross seas contribute to numerous boating incidents and maritime disasters.

In 2010, the European Space Agency stated, “The conditions are quite common in the ocean and occur when a windsea and a swell, or two swell systems, coexist.”

It referenced a 2004 study indicating that “a large percentage of ship accidents occurred in crossing sea states.”

Along the western coastline of France, at the Isle Rhe, this phenomenon is quite prevalent. Nevertheless, due to the extreme danger associated with entering the water during its occurrence, tourists are able to observe the water grids from a lighthouse situated on the western side of the island.
