Cracker Barrel Issues Apology After Backlash Over Controversial Décor

A customer at a Cracker Barrel in East Windsor, Connecticut, sparked controversy after posting photos on Twitter of ceiling decorations that resembled nooses. The images drew public backlash, prompting Cracker Barrel to issue an apology. The restaurant explained the cords were part of an antique soldering iron display but admitted they should have recognized the resemblance.

The item, which had been on display for 22 years, was removed immediately. Activists met with the restaurant’s manager, Mark Smith, for a “positive” conversation.

Cracker Barrel stated it aims to create a respectful and inclusive environment and is reviewing its décor practices. Social media users have since called on the chain to audit decorations at all locations.
