What shocked the community even more was the arrest of 14 children—ages 11 to 14—in connection with his death. All have been released on bail as the investigation continues, with police treating the case as manslaughter.

The derelict building, often used as a teen hangout, became the site of unthinkable loss. Layton’s family described him as a “cheeky, happy lad” with a heart of gold. “Layton, we love you more than any words can ever explain,” they wrote. “You will be missed more than you’ll ever know.”
