As her horse was drowning, this woman did the unthinkable

Horse Trapped in Rising Tide Saved in Dramatic Beach Rescue

Anyone who’s been by the ocean knows the tide can be dangerously unpredictable. It can turn treacherous in seconds—and nearly claimed the life of an 18-year-old horse named Astro.

Astro was out for a ride with his owner, Nicole Graham, and her daughter along a beach near Geelong, south of Melbourne, Australia. But the horses wandered onto soft sand that quickly turned into a muddy trap.

Nicole’s daughter and her horse managed to escape, but Astro sank deeper. Soon, he was stuck up to his neck in thick clay. Nicole stayed by his side, trying to keep him calm while the tide crept closer.

For three hours, Nicole held Astro’s head up and comforted him as he fought exhaustion and dehydration. A veterinarian sedated him to keep him from panicking, but efforts to lift him out by helicopter failed.

As the mud turned to quicksand and the tide approached, the situation became desperate. Rescue teams struggled to dig him out with little success.

Just when hope seemed lost, a local farmer arrived with a tractor. A final attempt was made using ropes attached to the vehicle.

In a miraculous moment, Astro was finally pulled free. Nicole, the farmer, and rescuers had managed to save him just in time.

Though Nicole regularly rides her 10 horses along the beach, this was the first time any had gotten stuck. The experience left her shaken—and reminded everyone how quickly nature can turn deadly.
