A tragic and chaotic scene unfolded late Tuesday evening in Louisville, Kentucky, when a UPS cargo plane erupted into flames just moments after takeoff, crashing into an industrial area and turning the night sky into a sea of orange and black smoke. The catastrophic event claimed the lives of at least seven people, left several others critically injured or missing, and sent shockwaves throughout the state and beyond.
The aircraft, identified by officials as UPS Flight 2976, had departed from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport shortly after 5 p.m. local time. Bound for Honolulu, Hawaii, the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 freighter was still ascending when it suddenly lost altitude and slammed into an area roughly three miles south of the airport, setting off a chain of explosions that lit up the skyline.
Fireball engulfs buildings
Eyewitnesses described the horrifying moment the massive plane roared overhead, trailing fire before striking several nearby structures, including a fuel recycling facility and a warehouse complex. Within seconds, an enormous fireball engulfed the area, sending flames hundreds of feet into the air and creating a wall of heat so intense that it melted vehicles parked nearby.
Firefighters from multiple departments across Jefferson County rushed to the scene, battling the inferno through the night as explosions continued to erupt from burning fuel tanks.
