At the Orphaned Wildlife Center in Middletown, New York, Marty and Debbie Kowalczik have devoted their lives to rescuing, rehabilitating, and caring for injured and orphaned wild animals. Their 100-acre sanctuary provides a permanent home for many creatures, including several species of bears. Among them is Jimmy, a 21-year-old bear who has lived his entire life at the center after being born in captivity.
Because Jimmy was raised by humans, he never developed the instincts needed to survive in the wild. Despite this, his gentle, affectionate nature has made him a beloved member of the center’s family. Standing over nine feet tall and weighing more than 1,500 pounds, Jimmy may look intimidating, but his calm and loving demeanor reveals his true character.
The sanctuary is not open to the public, ensuring that the animals’ well-being always comes first. Jimmy and the other bears enjoy large, natural enclosures, balanced diets, and enrichment activities that encourage natural behaviors.
For Jimmy, this sanctuary represents love, safety, and dignity. The Kowalcziks’ tireless work shows that true wildlife care means compassion, patience, and respect—providing animals like Jimmy not just shelter, but a life filled with trust, comfort, and genuine happiness.
