Unexplained Weight Loss and Persistent Fatigue
Unexplained weight loss—defined as losing more than 5% of body weight within six to twelve months without trying—can be a warning sign of underlying health issues. Conditions such as hyperthyroidism, diabetes, and certain cancers are common culprits. In hyperthyroidism, an overactive thyroid speeds up metabolism, causing weight loss despite normal or increased appetite, often accompanied by anxiety, tremors, or rapid heartbeat. Type 1 diabetes can also trigger sudden weight loss when the body breaks down fat and muscle due to insufficient insulin. Digestive cancers may reduce nutrient absorption, sometimes before other symptoms appear.
Persistent fatigue is another red flag. Unlike normal tiredness, it lingers despite rest and affects daily life. Anemia, caused by low red blood cell counts, often results in fatigue, pale skin, and shortness of breath. Thyroid disorders such as hypothyroidism may also lead to constant exhaustion. Early medical evaluation is essential to identify causes and begin timely treatment.
