On November 8, 1935, a boy was born who would later be celebrated as one of the most handsome men of his generation. Alain came into the world in a suburb of Paris, about 80 kilometers from Notre Dame Cathedral. His mother worked as a pharmacist.

When Alain’s father opened a cinema, his mother left her pharmacy work to take a job as cashier there. But when Alain was only three, his parents separated, and both remarried. This gave Alain half-siblings and a divided childhood.

His stepfather worked at a butcher’s shop, where his mother also found employment. With little time for him, his parents hired a nanny to look after the boy. Alain later admitted that at first, he enjoyed living between two families, but over time he felt like no one truly cared for him.

In school, Alain struggled. He was restless and mischievous, often breaking rules. His behavior led to repeated expulsions, and he had to switch schools several times. Academic success was never his strength, and he quickly turned to work.

As a teenager, Alain began training as a butcher under his stepfather’s guidance. Yet after just three months, he decided the trade wasn’t for him. He left the butcher shop and tried his hand at a job in a store instead.

The search for purpose continued until he joined the French Army. Surprisingly, this chapter brought structure and discipline to his life. Alain himself later admitted that military service had a positive influence on his character.

After completing his duty, Alain returned to civilian life. His next job was far from glamorous — working as a waiter. But this period marked the beginning of his transition into adulthood.

What seemed like an ordinary path for a troubled boy was quietly shaping the man who would one day capture the world’s attention.
