Tragic Accident on BR-251 Leaves 9 Dead, Including Child
A horrific crash between a van and a truck on Tuesday night (13), along BR-251 in Grão Mogol, Minas Gerais, left nine people dead and 12 injured. The victims included men, women, and a 4-year-old boy. The van was carrying seasonal workers returning to Ceará after harvesting work.
Initial investigations by the Civil Police indicate that the truck veered into the opposite lane, causing a head-on collision. Experts say tire and drag marks confirm this as the likely cause. Weather conditions, including rain and fog, may have contributed to the tragedy.
The road is known for accidents, especially during rain. The Federal Highway Police confirmed that the stretch has a high risk rate, and speeding is also under review.
The victims were aged between 4 and 52. Identification is ongoing through fingerprints and facial recognition. One victim remains unidentified.
Authorities also discovered that the van lacked proper authorization for interstate transport, raising concerns about unsafe, informal travel used by low-income workers. The National Land Transport Agency (ANTT) confirmed the vehicle was irregular and pledged full cooperation in the investigation.
A technical report is expected within 30 days, which may determine legal responsibility.
